75 Hours Basic Home Care Aide Training (Initiative 1163)

This training is a combination of 3 classes for a total of 75 hours. Training is required for new caregivers employed after 1/7/2012, or existing caregivers who were not employed as caregivers at any time in 2011. Classes include:

    • 5 Hour Orientation and Safety
    • 40 Hour Core Basic Training
    • 30 Hour Population Specific Training

*Please note, this is not the DDA training.


Orientation and Safety (5 Hours) Available through our Online Training Program

Orientation topics include the care setting, job responsibilities, the care plan and care team, client rights, documentation and reporting, mandatory reporting, and basic communication methods and techniques.

Safety topics include body mechanics, worker safety, accident prevention, emergency , disaster, and evacuation preparedness, hand washing and gloves, infection control and standard precautions, fire safety and prevention and fall prevention. This class does NOT count for CE credit.


Core Basic Training (40 Hours) Enroll Now

Core Basic Training is an enhanced version of Revised Fundamentals of Caregiving, teaching Long Term Care workers the skills and knowledge needed to provide basic care to a client. This course is a combination of Instructor lecture, activities, and hands-on skills practice in our fantastic skills lab. Students also receive information on the State certification testing process during this course.


Population Specific Training (30 Hours)

This training addresses the unique care needs of specific populations a Caregiver may work with. Students need 30 hours in this category and can achieve these hours in a number of way:

Option 1: Take all 30 hours on-site for discounted session rate of $240 when purchased at once. This includes 5 days of training  on the following topics:

  • Mental Health (Instructor led)
  • Dementia (Instructor led)
  • Traumatic Brain Injuries (Online hosted on-site in group)
  • Heart Disease (Online hosted on-site in group)
  • Diabetes (Online hosted on-site in group)

Option 2: Take all 30 hours online. Students may choose their own classes at individual course prices, or receive a discounted session bundle price of $240 when enrolled from this link:  Enroll Now (online) for Bundle

Classes in bundled price include:

Option 3: Submit certificate copies from courses that you already took with another DSHS training facility to count for some of the hours. Remaining hours needed can be taken online or on-site. Classes that can be counted are:

  • Mental Health Specialty
  • Dementia Specialty
  • Developmental Disability Specialty
  • Other approved DSHS population Specific certificates
  • Nurse Delegation Core *
  • Nurse Delegation Diabetes*

*  These topics may only count if the student is working in an Adult Family Home or Assisted Living. We cannot count these certificates for those working as In-Home Care worker per State requirements.

Mental Health Care Specialty (6 Hours)Enroll Now

Instructor led course. The State-developed course provides in-depth training for workers on the specialized needs and care of individuals with mental health issues. The course includes a general overview about mental health disorders, cultural sensitivity, respectful & non-judgmental communication, tools & methods to handle challenging behaviors, identifying decompensation & relapse, crisis & suicide intervention, and basic information regarding medication.

This class may also be used as a Specialty training for Adult Family Homes, Boarding Homes, or Assisted Living requirements. At enrollment, the student must choose to test as either a Long Term Care Worker, or as a Manager. Students passing the test will receive a Specialty certificate which also applies toward their Population Specific requirements. Students that do not pass the exam will still receive a Population Specific certificate. Students can also choose to take this class for CE credit.

Dementia Care Specialty (8 Hours)Enroll Now

Instructor led course. This State-developed course provides in-depth training for workers on the specialized needs and care of individuals with dementia related issues. The course includes methods to help explore and handle challenging behaviors such as: physical violence & aggressive behaviors, the impact of dementia on communication, how to effectively assist a person with dementia with ADL’s, ideas & tips for involvement in meaningful activities, differentiation between hallucinations & delusions, intervention strategies, dementia’s effects on sexuality, medications, and supporting caregiver’s well-being.

This class may also be used as a Specialty training for Adult Family Homes, Boarding Homes, or Assisted Living requirements. At enrollment, the student must choose to test as either a Long Term Care Worker, or as a Manager. To provide students with the best chances for success, students taking the Manager test will not be able to test at the end of class and must schedule their test during one of our upcoming Test dates offered (most Tuesdays at 9am) within 30 days of their training. Students passing the test will receive a Specialty certificate which also applies toward their Population Specific requirements. Students that do not pass the exam will still receive a Population Specific certificate. Students can also choose to take this course for CE credit.

Traumatic Brain Injury (6 hours)Enroll Now

Online class hosted on-site in group setting. This is not an Instructor-led course. Great option for those without access to a computer at home, or those that don't feel knowledgeable with computer usage on their own.  Course covers TBI Introduction, Effects of Injury, Cognitive Impairments, Emotions, and Recovery.  Students can take this course for population specific or CE credit.

Diabetes (6 hours) Enroll Now

Online class hosted on-site in group setting. This is not an Instructor-led course. Great option for those without access to a computer at home, or those that don't feel knowledgeable with computer usage on their own. Everyone knows someone with diabetes and, as a caregiver, you will be helping a client manage their diabetes.  Learn about the cause, blood sugar, dietary needs and so much more. This course can count for population specific training, or CE credit. *This is NOT the Nurse Delegation Diabetes Special Focus.*

Heart Disease (4 hours) Enroll Now

Online class hosted on-site in group setting. This is not an Instructor-led course. Great option for those without access to a computer at home, or those that don't feel knowledgeable with computer usage on their own. Relevant as many of the clients you serve will have heart disease.  The course covers the causes of heart disease, atherosclerosis, heart attacks, caregiving tips and so much more. This course can count for population specific training, or CE credit.
